Who invented liquid soap and why?

I found two possible people:
1) Liquid Soap was invented by Hendrik Willem Brouwer of Holland. Lever Brothers saw the potential to increase sales and profits due to the convenience of a soap that could easily be dispensed in public places like public
restrooms, as a better alternative than providing a community bar of soap
2) New York City resident, William Sheppard, was the first person to get liquid soap patented. It was patented on August 22, 1865. Unfortunately, I do not know why he invented liquid soap.
